BioFlorida, Florida’s life sciences association, hosted the state’s life science industry during its 17th Annual Life Sciences Conference on Oct. 12-14 at the Harbor Beach Marriott in Ft. Lauderdale. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) served as a Platinum Sponsor, and joined key influencers from emerging and established companies, universities, research institutions, economic development agencies, investment community and the state legislature. The conference featured programming highlighting Florida’s leading-edge science, business innovations and public policy debates.

One highlight of the conference included a “University Presidents Panel” with NSU President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D. and the leaders of Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University and University of South Florida. Other panels included a presentation on marine biotechnology by Joe Lopez, Ph.D., professor at NSU’s Oceanographic Center, and a presentation on regenerative medicine by Nancy Klimas, M.D., director of NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine. Other featured topics at the conference included advancements in infectious diseases, oncology, Alzheimer’s disease, medical tourism, ophthalmology and innovation in Florida.

“This BioFlorida Conference addresses all segments of our industry and presents the opportunity for the entire life science community across the state to come together with one statewide voice,” said Andrew Duffell, chair of the 2014 Annual Conference and president of the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University. “It is at the intersection of science, business and public policy that we will advance our industry. I encourage all those who care about our state to support the industry and participate in this year’s event.”
