NSU Orlando Employees e-mentor Local High School Students
The NSU Orlando Student Education Center (SEC) employees continue to make a difference in the community. On Dec. 8, they hosted 28 students from nearby Sheeler High School at a Christmas luncheon held at the SEC.
Sheeler High School helps students who have not been successful in other public or private schools to obtain a high school diploma. The SEC employees are “e-mentors” to these students, many of whom are disadvantaged and are trying to make it on their own with little or no support from adults at home.
The Sheeler students are 16-22 years old and they work at their own pace via computers and the SEC employees creatively utilize the electronic system of emails to work with, mentor, and support these students on a weekly basis.
The luncheon event also provided an opportunity for the staff to have one-on-one talk time with their mentees and to make group presentations. Employees addressing the group were: Mirtha Bailey on Financial Aid; Brian Williams on Steps to Success; Richard Hudnett on Planning for Success; and Doug Crowell on My Success Story. Melba Ovalle, M.D., gave a brief talk on the Physician Assistance (PA) program, and discussed other careers in the field of health offered at the SEC. The event concluded with a tour of the building. SEC staff members from all departments attended and participated in the program, which was a resounding success.
