NSU Mourns the Loss of Baseball Student-Athlete Dallas Perez
Nova Southeastern University baseball student-athlete Dallas Perez, a member of NSU’s 2016 baseball national championship team, died tragically on Sunday morning in a car accident in Broward County. The 21-year-old sophomore was a finance major at NSU.
“The entire Sharks family is sadden and shocked by this tragic news,” said Director of Athletics Michael Mominey. “Dallas represented what NSU baseball and NSU athletics is all about. We share in the grief alongside the Perez family as we all mourn his loss.”
After playing football at Appalachian State for one year, Perez returned to his home in South Florida and joined the NSU Sharks baseball family in August 2015. He was a part of the team’s amazing run that resulted in the 2016 NCAA Division II national championship. In his first year with the Sharks, he had 19 starts and 65 at bats. Perhaps the biggest highlight of Perez’s freshman season was when he hit a two-out grand slam against conference rival Saint Leo on March 24, 2016.
“There are no words to heal and no mistaking the pain. We are all at a deficit in the wake of this tragedy, but none more than his family,” said head baseball coach Greg Brown. “My heart is saddened; there is a void. And there are harder days ahead. We will all mourn in our own way. Please know that there is no protocol and right or wrong. I believe life is about relationships and about people. This pain will heal in time. Sharks Family forever. DP21 Forever”
The university and NSU athletics administration will be working to make crisis counselors available for students/faculty/staff needing to speak with someone about this tragedy, for as long as they are needed.
