NSU Medical School Expands Medical Residencies Throughout South Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL— Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine has expanded medical residency programs throughout South Florida to address the shortage of doctors.

South Florida, like the rest of the nation, is experiencing a shortage of physicians because the number of doctors coming out of medical residency programs has not kept up with the demands of an aging population that requires more health care.

Lasting between three to seven years, medical residencies are required training for medical school graduates to become board-certified doctors.

Recognizing this shortage and knowing that most physicians will practice close to where they did their residency, NSU’s medical school is working with local health care partners to create residencies that will help to offset this physician shortage.

NSU’s medical school has partnered with the following health care entities to create new residencies.

  • Larkin Community Hospital in South Miami.
    • Family Medicine Residency
    • Family Medicine/Neuromuscular Medicine
    • Psychiatry Residency
  • Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah
    • Internal Medicine Residency
    • Cardiology Fellowship
  • Broward General Medical Center
    • Internal Medicine Residency
    • Palliative Care Fellowship
  • Columbia Hospital West Palm Beach
    • Internal Medicine Residency
    • Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency
  • Florida Department of Corrections
    • Correctional Medicine Fellowship
  • Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office
    • Forensic Pathology Fellowship

In addition to new residencies, NSU’s medical school is also affiliated with 40 residency programs in varying disciplines. These residencies are housed at partner institutions such as Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Children’s Hospital, the Palm Beach County Health Department, Palms West Hospital, and the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
