NSU Jacksonville Campus Raises Funds for the “Apple Project”
The NSU Jacksonville Campus recently partnered with area schools and businesses to raise money for the construction of the only free dental clinic in Jacksonville for low income residents. Working towards a goal of raising $100,000 through a campaign called the “Apple Project”, the students and staff at NSU Jacksonville organized several apple-themed fundraisers.
The School of Dental Medicine donated toothbrushes and toothpaste while students, faculty, and staff from NSU Jacksonville participated in apple pie eating contests, sold apple recipe booklets and candy apples to raise money. Most of the money, however, came from donation jars that were placed in local businesses, restaurants and churches. NSU Jacksonville raised $1,384 to help the cause. With the Wayne Weaver Foundation matching donations dollar for dollar, the project achieved its $100,000 goal.
On January 22, Kathy Sandusky, regional campus director, and Michael Doyle, assistant director of NSU’s Jacksonville Campus attended the demolition ceremony of an old dental clinic to pave the way for the new free dental clinic.
The new clinic will open in the latter part of 2014 with a capacity to serve over 10,000 uninsured and underinsured patients a year. The project was spearheaded by local news anchor Jeannie Blaylock of First Coast News, and Community Health Outreach, a non-profit organization, who will manage the clinic.
