NSU Hosts Charity Golf Tournament to Fight Human Trafficking

Richard E. Davis, dean of NSU’s College of Allied Health and Nursing and participant in the Fore the Kids tournament; and Deborah Mulligan, M.D., director of NSU’s Institute for Child Health Policy and tournament organizer.

When celebrity golfers hit the fairways at the Ft. Lauderdale Country Club on May 7, they sank birdies to combat human trafficking. That’s because they participated in NSU’s 6th annual Fore the Kids: Saving Lives charity golf tournament that raised money to battle human trafficking, a global problem requiring local action.

It is inconceivable, yet sadly true, that in Florida, people are being bought, sold, and smuggled. Trapped in lives of misery, they are often beaten, starved, and forced to work as prostitutes or take grueling jobs as migrant, domestic, restaurant, or factory workers with little or no pay.  Each year, between 14,500 and 17,500 people are being trafficked to the United States for the purposes of prostitution. Of those, 50 percent became victims at ages 12 to 14. Florida is one of the top four destinations in the United States for human trafficking.
