NSU Hosts Book Signing for Division Director’s Latest Release
Marlisa Santos, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Humanities, participated in a book signing for her newest release, The Dark Mirror: Psychiatry and Film Noir, on Apr. 14. The signing took place in the Alvin Sherman Library on NSU’s main campus.
The Dark Mirror (Lexington Books) probes the meanings behind the depiction of psychiatry and psychological illness in film noir. “The essential thesis of the book is that the popularization of psychoanalysis in the U.S. in the 1940s and 1950s, in great part due to its use on World War II soldiers and veterans, was one of the most important factors in defining and influencing the series of films known as film noir,” Santos said.
Prior to the signing, Santos delivered a presentation about the book and the topic, which she researched for six years before penning the text. At NSU, Santos teaches a variety of undergraduate film courses, including a class on film noir.
