NSU to Host Panel Discussion on BP Oil Spill, June 16

The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has become the largest oil spill in U.S. History. This environmental catastrophe is polluting the Gulf Coast, killing wildlife, and ruining the commercial fishing and tourism industries in Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states. As the oil spill continues, many are concerned the oil will pollute Florida’s beaches, kill coral reefs and other marine life, and negatively impact the Sunshine State’s economy.

NSU is hosting a panel discussion on the BP spill on June 16 at 5:30 p.m. on its main campus. The panel will examine the economic and environmental impacts of the spill on Florida and the Gulf Coast. The panelists include:

  • Richard Dodge, Ph.D., Dean of NSU’s Oceanographic Center and Executive Director of the National Coral Reef Institute
  • David Mica, Executive Director of the Florida Petroleum Council
  • Jorge Pinon, former president of Amoco Oil Latin America and former BP executive
  • Robert Jarvis, J.D., professor of law at NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center and maritime law expert
  • Alexander Soloviev, oceanographer and associate professor at NSU’s Oceanographic Center.

Sun-Sentinel editorial writer Doug Lyons will moderate the panel. This free event, which is open to the NSU community and the public, will also include a question and answer session.

Date: Wednesday, June 16
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Location: Knight Auditorium in the Carl DeSantis Building, 3301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale-Davie.
