Fort Myers Students and Faculty Gather to Remember a Fallen Colleague

Students and staff at the NSU Fort Myers campus assembled this past January for an afternoon of island food and music to celebrate and remember a fallen colleague. The campus SGA arranged a scholarship fundraiser in memory of NSU Nursing student Wade Jones who was tragically killed while at his home in Miami Gardens during Spring Break of 2013. In exchange for a $5 donation, supporters of the recently established Wade Jones Memorial Scholarship were treated to a plate of Haitian cuisine and a drink.

“Since January 27 is Wade’s birthday, we wanted to do something to remember him,” said SGA Vice President Danielle McDonald. “So this is basically one of the best ways we figured we could do that.”

The event drew a significant crowd with staff members from the Veterans’ Administration coming by to contribute because they were so moved by the story.

“To see young people coming together to celebrate a fallen classmate’s life in this way is truly a blessing,” said Abraham S. Fischler School of Education doctoral student Reginald Bruno.

Nursing Program Director Kim Hogan, M.S.N., R.N., C.M.S.R.N., also expressed satisfaction with the event as she feels that the scholarship is a great way to ensure that Jones’ legacy continues. The goal is for the scholarship to be awarded to at least one student per year enrolled in the NSU Fort Myers Nursing Program.

Fort Myers SGA President Johny Williamceau has pledged that the organization will work toward raising funds each year for the foreseeable future.
