NSU Faculty Present During the 33rd Congress of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health

Every two years, the International Academy of Law and Mental Health (IALMH) convenes the International Congress on Law and Mental Health, bringing together the international community of researchers, academics, practitioners and professionals in the field whose wide-ranging perspectives contribute to a comprehensive look at important issues related to law and mental health. This year’s congress was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, July 14-19.

IALMH is based on the belief that the issues arising from the interaction between law and mental health are best solved using multidisciplinary approaches applied on a national level and inspired by the law, the health professions, social sciences and humanities.

NSU’s multidisciplinary team of presenters included the following:

Alina Perez, J.D., M.P.H.

  • The Therapeutic Value of Mandated Reporting of Poor
Diabetes Control: The Case of the New York City Department

among Older Adults for Better Health Outcomes: Could a
Mandatory Chronic Disease Registry be a Beneficial Tool?

Kathy L. Cerminara, J.D., LL.M., J.S.D.

    High-Relative-Value End-of-Life Option

Lenore E. Walker, Ed.D.

  • Trauma Intervention in Jails with Different Populations: The STEP Program
  • Seven Deadly Sins in Family Court

 Tara Jungersen, Ph.D.

  • Training Graduate Students in Trauma Intervention
  • Conducting Family Court Research with Community Partners

Naushira Pandya, M.D.

  • Clinical Correlates of Impaired Decision-Making in Older
    Adults

 David L. Shapiro, Ph.D.

  • Risk Assessment in Family Court Parenting Evaluations
  • Transfer of Mentally Ill Prisoners to Psychiatric Facilities

Vincent B. Van Hasselt, Ph.D.

  • Murder-Suicide in Family Court Cases
  • Crisis Intervention Team Training for Law Enforcement and Mental Health Professionals

Several of NSU’s presenters also played roles in the organization of the congress. Professors  Shapiro, from the Center for Psychological Studies and Cerminara from the Shepard Broad Law Center were on the International Scientific Committee.  In addition, this IALMH congress, like many recent ones, included a “therapeutic jurisprudence stream,” which is a series of sessions focusing on a legal theory focusing on and encouraging empirical research into the law’s impact on emotional life and psychological well-being.  Professor Cerminara co-organized this year’s therapeutic jurisprudence stream of sessions.  And lastly, Professor Shapiro was appointed to the International Scientific Advisory Committee for the IALMH group.
