NSU Doctoral Student Receives Local Hero Award

 Karlyn G. Emile, M.P.H.

Karlyn G. Emile, M.P.H.

Karlyn G. Emile, M.P.H., CHES, a 2016 candidate for a Doctor of Health Science degree in NSU’s College of Health Care Sciences, recently received the “Local Hero Award” from the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD). She was honored for her tireless efforts in raising awareness, developing programs, and advocating for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD).

The Local Hero Award is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution in the field of IDD in his or her community.

Emile oversees the Special Olympics Florida Healthy Community in South Florida. The Healthy Community is a premier health care delivery approach that focuses solely on individuals with IDD.

Emile also serves as a preceptor for public health, dietetics and nutrition, nursing, and health service administration for students in all of the major local universities. She utilizes this opportunity as a means to expose and train future health practitioners to work with the IDD population. She has mentored over 200 students in the past three years.

She developed a curriculum/course that can be served as an elective in many of the health disciplines and has authored articles and presented on topics related to IDD.
