NSU Doctoral Student Receives Degree in Iraqi Palace

John Saindon Jr. shakes hands with Caroline L. Baker, M.Ed. chief, continuing education programs, Office of the Secretary of Defense, as Army Brigadier General Donald J. Currier, J.D., (middle) commander of 49th Military Police Brigade looks on.

U.S. Army 1st Lt. John Saindon Jr., who was also a NSU doctoral student in the College of Allied Health and Nursing, is the first NSU graduate to receive a degree in an Iraqi palace. Saindon received his doctor of health science degree on May 17 at the Al Faw Palace in Baghdad during a graduation ceremony for military personnel. About 70 military personnel received their degrees at Al Faw, which was constructed to commemorate Iraqi forces retaking the Al-Faw Peninsula during the Iran – Iraq War. The building, which is near Baghdad International Airport, is also known as the Water Palace.

Of the military personnel receiving degrees from various universities during the ceremony, Saindon was the only one to earn a doctorate. At the time of his graduation, Saindon was deployed with the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in Iraq as a medical operations and environmental officer.  His duties included ensuring the health safety of soldiers on active duty throughout the Middle East.  After completing tours of duty in Iraq, Saindon returned to the U.S.  Saindon, who is continuing his military duties, is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. Health Science Program at the College of Allied Health and Nursing.
