NSU College of Pharmacy Welcomes New Faculty Members

NSU’s College of Pharmacy (COP) recently welcomed three new faculty members. They are Timothy Gauthier, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice; Shara Elrod, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice; and Ioana Popovici, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Sociobehavioral & Administrative Pharmacy.
Gauthier received his Pharm.D. degree from COP in 2008. He completed one-year of pharmacy practice residency followed by a one-year infectious diseases pharmacy residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He joins COP as an assistant professor of pharmacy practice with a practice site at Jackson, where he will serve as a preceptor for an advanced infectious diseases pharmacy practice experience. He will be providing lectures on infectious diseases topics within the therapeutics course sequence and participating in the residency interviewing preparation seminar.
Elrod received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin and completed a community pharmacy practice residency and an ambulatory care specialty residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She joins COP as assistant professor of pharmacy practice with a site at Memorial Primary Care in Miramar, where she will serve as an advanced pharmacy practice experience preceptor.
She will also be teaching the COP therapeutics course sequence. Elrod’s primary research interests include effective delivery of clinical services to underserved populations and women’s health.
Popovici received her doctorate in economics from Florida International University and worked as a senior researcher with the Health Economics Research Group at the University of Miami. Popovici’s research is concerned primarily with the economic evaluation of substance abuse treatment interventions. She has published articles in various economics and multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journals. Popovici has also worked with several academic collaborators of many disciplines and state officials, and has served as investigator on several grants and contracts funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the Florida State Department of Children and Families. Popovici will teach Health Economics for the first year Ph.D. students.
