NSU College of Pharmacy Pharmacists Implement new Rapid HIV Testing Service
Elizabeth Sherman, PharmD and Shara Elrod, PharmD, assistant professors of Pharmacy Practice at NSU’s College of Pharmacy, have implemented a new rapid point-of-care HIV testing service at Memorial Primary Care Center at Miramar.
Sherman and Elrod are among the first pharmacists in the nation to expand their medication management services into the provision of HIV point-of-care testing. The test is available to anyone, free of charge, with results available in 15 minutes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends HIV screening in adults, adolescents, and pregnant women in health care settings. Recent estimates suggest that 1 in 5 people in the United States who are infected with HIV are unaware of their status.
No appointment is necessary and walk-ins are welcome. The service is provided on an ongoing basis from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every weekday, except Thursday. Memorial Primary Care Center at Miramar is located at 6730 Miramar Parkway in Miramar. For additional information, please call 954-276-6601.
