NSU College of Pharmacy Welcomes New Associate Dean of Professional Programs

Robert McGory, associate dean professional programs, NSU College of Pharmacy

Robert McGory, associate dean professional programs, NSU College of Pharmacy.

Robert McGory, M.S., Pharm.D., recently joined NSU’s College of Pharmacy as associate dean of professional programs. He brings his rich and varied history as a practicing pharmacist, an educator, a researcher and an administrator. McGory initially trained as a microbiologist receiving a bachelor of science degree from Cornell University. He received both his masters of science in microbiology and bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Kentucky and his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Minnesota. Following completion of formal studies, McGory embarked upon a career of building patient-centered pharmacy services for several teaching hospitals as well as teaching therapeutic principles for several pharmacy and medicine programs.

McGory has provided patient care as a member of various medical, surgical and critical care programs. He established pharmacokinetic monitoring services and nutrition support consultation services as well as a research program with the Solid Organ Transplantation Department at the University of Virginia. McGory’s research in the pharmacokinetic properties of hepatitis B immune globulin in the post liver transplant patient population led to the first successful experience in protecting liver recipients from re-infection of the hepatic allograft following transplantation for hepatitis B virus induced cirrhosis. This led to McGory being awarded the endowed position as chair of transplantation pharmacology in the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia.

McGory has been a very active educator and mentor throughout his career. In addition to clinical training of medical and surgical residents, he has held faculty appointments with the colleges of pharmacy at North Dakota State University, Western University of Health Sciences and Northeast Ohio Medical University. He has also been instrumental in establishing or expanding American Society of Health System Pharmacists (FSHP) accredited PGY1 residencies at the University of Virginia and Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Florida.

Success as a practitioner, educator and researcher led to McGory’s transition to become an administrator. McGory was recruited to be the first chair of pharmacy practice at Western University of Health Sciences and then served as the founding executive associate dean of the College of Pharmacy of Northeast Ohio Medical University, where he guided accreditation, curriculum development, admissions and assessment. Most recently, McGory was the director of pharmacy at Indian River Medical Center, where he utilized residents and students to extend pharmacist provided patient centered services, successfully proving that in today’s atmosphere of reduced health care reimbursement, services can be maintained and expanded by incorporating pharmacists in training as providers. McGory will work closely with NSU College of Pharmacy Dean Lisa Deziel, Pharm.D., Ph.D., and the college’s executive team and faculty to maintain high quality education for student pharmacists and will help expand the influence the college has within the profession of pharmacy.
