NSU College of Pharmacy Students Develop Community Program to Promote Project Vaccination

The NSU College of Pharmacy Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists-Student Chapter (FSHP-SC) introduced its Project Vaccination outreach program to the community this fall.  FSHP-SC established a partnership between Fighting Infectious Diseases in Emerging Countries (FIDEC) and Walgreens to develop this community program geared toward promoting vaccination awareness among minority populations of South Florida. In its inaugural year, Project Vaccination was a tremendous success as students were able to reach out to the community at multiple Walgreens locations across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.  Students first participated in training sessions held by FIDEC and Walgreens to learn about vaccinations, preventable diseases, and how to counsel about the importance of getting vaccinated. The training prepared students to reach out to Walgreens customers, specifically focusing on the most accessible vaccinations: influenza, pneumococcal, and herpes zoster (shingles) vaccines. The overall goal of the program is to educate as many individuals in the community as possible, address misconceptions and concerns, and increase the amount of vaccinations administered in an effort to reduce overall incidence of these preventable diseases.  As a result of this program’s success, FSHP-SC will continue to offer Project Vaccination in coming years.
