NSU College of Nursing Participates in Shark Tagging Expedition

Melissa Morris, clinical lab manager of human patient simulations and skills lab for the NSU College of Nursing, joins nursing student Amber Girardi, who caught a nurse shark off of Dania Beach, Florida coast.
A staff member and student duo from NSU’s College of Nursing recently participated in a “Saving “Ocean Life” shark tagging expedition with Derek Burkholder, Ph.D., NSU research scientist, who works with the NSU Guy Harvey Research Institute, NSU’s Save our Seas Shark Research Center, and Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program.
Burkholder dedicates much of his time to educating individuals and groups on the importance of researching sharks for conservation and environmental sustainability. As part of his work, he leads shark-tagging trips launched from the NSU Ocean Campus in Dania Beach, Florida. Participants have the opportunity to assist in catching, tagging, and releasing sharks, which are then monitored by scientists at NSU. Additionally, they measure and often take tissue and other samples to assist with NSU’s conservation and genetic research.
