NSU Baseball Tabbed Third in NCBWA Preseason South Region Poll
The Nova Southeastern University baseball team has been voted the third best team in the NCAA South Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Sharks trail the 2015 National Champions Tampa and 2015 NCAA South Region host West Alabama in the preseason poll.
The Sharks finished 2015 with a record of 39-13, winning the programs first-ever Sunshine State Conference title.
NSU is one of five Sunshine State Conference schools to crack the rankings. While Tampa sits atop the poll with five first-place votes and 57 points, Lynn (fourth, 39 pts.), Florida Tech (fifth, 37 pts.) and Saint Leo (10 pts.) round out the list of conference foes in the poll.
Two NSU players were voted to the NCBWA Preseason All South Region team, also revealed on Tuesday.
Alex Mateo and Devin Raftery were named to the first and second-team, respectively. Mateo finished 2015 with 10 wins and the most strikeouts in the SSC with 93. Raftery had a record setting year in 2015, earning an ERA of 1.30, the lowest ERA in program history with a minimum of 25 innings.
The Sharks open their 2016 season on Friday, January 29, hosting the Tusculum Pioneers. The 2015 SSC Championship team will be presenting with their rings prior to the game.
