NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale recently implemented a new comprehensive education program that  consolidates all of its education programs into its main building at One East Las Olas Boulevard and greatly expands its outreach to the community. The Studio School has been located at its address, across the street from the Museum in a rented space at 4 West Las Olas Boulevard, since 2004 and was named the AutoNation Academy of Art + Design in 2011. The museum was recently notified that the building housing the Academy has plans for redevelopment and that the Academy’s lease will end on August 31, 2015 following the conclusion of its summer programming, which will take place as planned.

“As part of our strategic planning, we recognized the importance of conducting more education programs within the museum itself,” said Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. During this period of transition, we will be reviewing all the options for the museum’s AutoNation Academy and education programs.

Clearwater said they had been closely watching Fort Lauderdale’s robust real estate scene and were aware there was the possibility that the Academy’s lease could end. This year, several initiatives were launched to increase and broaden the museum’s educational community outreach including after-school enrichment classes, art classes conducted throughout the region, master artist workshops and The Art of Teaching Art lectures and conferences.

The unification of the museum’s education programs is the latest in a series of exciting initiatives that began in 2013 with Bonnie Clearwater’s appointment as the museum’s director. These include an institutional re-branding, expansion of the museum’s exhibitions, public and membership programs and outreach to new audiences.

Beginning this fall, classes for children, teens and adults will take place in the museum’s main building. The museum will also increase its education outreach programs to schools, community centers and residential developments. Additionally, programs such as the Master Artist Workshop series, which launched in October, 2014 with artist Julian Schnabel, and the upcoming Art of Teaching Art symposium, scheduled for Fall 2015, will be expanded. A full schedule of education programs will be announced this summer.

“We look forward to bringing these programs as well as studio classes into the museum to enhance our students’ experiences,” said Clearwater.
