NSU Alumni Spotlight: Tony Gaskew, Ph.D. (M.S. ’05, Ph.D. ’08)
Tony Gaskew, Ph.D.
Tony Gaskew, Ph.D. (M.S. ’05, Ph.D. ’08), is associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also serves as director for the Criminal Justice Program and coordinator for Criminal Forensic Studies and Legal Studies. In addition, he is a research team member for Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies at Columbia University.
Gaskew’s research interests range from prisoner education initiatives, restorative justice, and structural violence to peacemaking, criminology, Islamic studies, and crisis intervention. His previous research collaborations include the Global Hostage-Taking and Analysis Project for the U.S. Department of Justice—FBI and a short-term study in Israel while studying at NSU.
Gaskew’s honors include the Fulbright-Hays Fellow for a research project in Egypt, the Academic Fellow in Terrorist Studies for a research project in Israel by The Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Teacher of the Year by The National Society of Leadership and Success, FCI McKLean Volunteer of the Year by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Florida Narcotic Officer of the Year, and Melbourne Police Department Detective of the Year.
His prior work as a police officer and Florida State Supreme Court mediator, together with his research, provide insight into one of his future goals. Gaskew aims to create a postsecondary prison education program that “allows every incarcerated person in America the ability to transform into an incarcerated college student,” he said. He also feels that a criminal justice platform can be developed to culturally transform correctional facilities into correctional campuses.
“NSU has allowed me the educational foundation to expand my career and professional voice within the criminal justice field into unimaginable heights,” Gaskew said. “Words alone cannot describe the impact. I have humbly attempted to use the education I received from NSU to improve the lives of everyone involved in the criminal justice system.”
