NSU Alumni Spotlight: Gary Killam, Ph.D. (B.S. ’97, Ph.D. ’14)

Gary Killam, Ph.D. (B.S. ’97, Ph.D.’14)

Gary Killam, Ph.D. (B.S. ’97, Ph.D.’14), is the dean for Criminal Justice and Public Safety at St. Johns River State College. He recently graduated from the Florida Chancellors Leadership Seminar. His 32 years in law enforcement include 20 years at the administrative and management levels and more than 15 years of investigative work. Killam is recognized as an expert in the field of gangs, speaking nationally on the topic. He also serves as the cochair of the Florida Department of Education Advisory Committee for Law, Public Safety and Security, and Government and Public Administration.

Previously, Killam served as the deputy chief for the Duval County School Police Department and was a major with the Davie Police Department, where he wrote and obtained $3.5 million in grant funding, totaling implementation of $10 million in funded programs. He was an adjunct faculty member at NSU and collaborated with the university to create the ADAPT juvenile diversion program, as well as Domestic Abuse Response Teams (DART). “NSU has provided me with the knowledge and skills needed to excel within the organizations I have worked,”Killam said. “Upon completion of my coursework during my Ph.D., I was promoted to dean at my current institution, which I attributed to NSU and its reputation as an institution of excellence.”

His honors include the FGIA Inaugural Gary Killam Career Service Award, FCJEA Outstanding Service award, NEFLEA Outstanding Performance award, Davie Officer of the Year award, Bronze Medal for Outstanding Performance, Distinguished Service Award from the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency, Phi Delta Kappa, and Broward County Red Ribbon Officer of the Year award.
