NSU hosts “Active Shooter” Table Top Exercise

3G1B3493

NSU Active Shooter Table Top Exercise Presenter: John Touhsant, Public Safety Training & Development Specialist

NSU held a Table Top Exercise in the Carl DeSantis Sales Institute in February. This latest Table Top Exercise (TTX) revolved around the topic of an active shooter situation.

The Training Coordinator of the Public Safety Department provided the refresher training which was designed to review specific information and provide the tools required for a specific response. Attendees received refresher training on the basic protocols of Run, Hide, Fight, which is the national accepted response to an active shooter event.

Later, two thought-provoking videos were shown and the TTX began. There were three modules included in this exercise and each table worked together as a team to find solutions to the problems that were posed. The modules were time specific and as soon as the time finished for module one teams shared their answers with the larger group. This way all in attendance could benefit from others perspectives, thought process and experience.

This conduct was repeated for each module. Each team was fully engaged in the process and it was interesting to see the interaction at each table. The answers that came from the various teams were complete and insightful. Upon completion of module three, participants were asked to complete a written exit interview. The responses included in these exit interviews indicated that most of the participants truly appreciated the exposure to this training opportunity and believed that it was time well spent.
