November is National Diabetes Awareness Month-Make an Appointment for an Eye Exam Today
Diabetes is on the rise. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is estimated to affect 29 million Americans, or 9.3 percent of the population. That is up from the previous estimate of 26 million in 2010. One in four people with diabetes does not know he or she has it, while another 86 million adults (one in three U.S. adults) have pre-diabetes. Without intervention, 15 – 30 percent of people with pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years.
Comprehensive Diabetes Care Includes:
• “ABCs of Diabetes” (Hemoglobin A1C, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol)
• Interdisciplinary Management
• Understanding Diabetic Eye Disease
• Importance of a Comprehensive Eye Examination
The Eye Care Institute at NSU would like to remind you that optometry plays a pivotal role in the detection, reduction of visual impairment, and management of diabetes related eye disease.
