November is Diabetes Awareness Month
Diabetes and the EYE: Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body produces little or no insulin. It affects many parts of the body, including the eyes. Diabetes is the leading cause of
blindness in the United States. The major cause of blindness in people with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, a condition in which there is damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. Additionally, patients with diabetes are at a greater risk for the development of glaucoma and cataracts as well as experiencing fluctuation in their vision or double vision.
The NSU Eye Care Institute would like to remind you that a comprehensive eye examination plays a pivotal role in the detection, reduction of visual impairment, and management of diabetes related eye disease.
