NSU Speaker’s Forum Hosted by Dr. Larry A. Calderon, Sept. 2
Abraham S. Fischler, M.A., Ed.D., President Emeritus of Nova Southeastern University, will be the featured speaker at NSU’s Speaker’s Forum on Friday, Sept. 2. He will discuss the necessary changes in public education.
After earning his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in 1959, Fischler went on to serve as assistant professor of science education at Harvard University and professor of Education at the University of California at Berkeley, before joining NSU in 1966. Recognizing that the educational system was failing about one third of the American population, Fischler promoted drastic changes in the way students learn. Rather than compete on the arbitrary playing field of time, he proposed that the curriculum be tailored to each student’s individual needs, with content delivered in a manner and at a pace consistent with his or her learning style. In fact, he began the Fischler School of Education and Human Services (now called the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education) to fill an existing need in the community. Fischler served as president of NSU from 1970 to 1992.
Fischler is currently serves on numerous community, education and other boards, including the Broward Education Foundation on appointment by The School Board of Broward County. During his 22-year tenure as President of NSU, Fischler strove to constantly push the boundaries of traditional education methods and succeeded in centering the university around the needs of its students. Fischler continues to advocate for change and evolution in the American school system, and publishes his thoughts regularly in his weblog, entitled “The Student is the Class” (http://www.thestudentistheclass.com).
The weekly Nova Speaker’s Forum, hosted by Larry A. Calderon, Ed.D., NSU vice president for community and governmental relations, takes place each Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served. The Speaker’s Forum is held on the second floor of the Horvitz Administration Building in the President’s Board Room.
