Nova Southeastern University Opens New OCD Clinic in South Florida
Anyone can be fastidious about cleanliness, be concerned about skin blemishes, or become a collector, but when these habits shift to recurrent and distressing obsessions, compulsions, or hoarding, they can actually be symptoms of disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), or hoarding.
Jedidiah Siev, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Center for Psychological Studies, has opened the NORD Clinic, specializing in the latest research-based, proven treatments for OCD, BDD, hoarding, hair-pulling, skin picking, and tic disorders. Located within NSU’s Psychological Services Center, services are available for adults and adolescents.
“We are thrilled to be a resource for individuals suffering from OCD and related disorders in South Florida,” said Siev. “OCD itself affects about 2 percent of the population at some point, tends to be chronic if untreated, and has been identified by the World Health Organization as a leading cause of illness-related disability. There are excellent cognitive-behavioral treatments that help most people; however, many people do not have access to specialty treatment. Our goal is to increase access for individuals in the region.”
Prior to joining NSU, Siev trained with renowned OCD researchers and clinicians, Michael Jenike, M.D., Sabine Wilhelm, Ph.D., and Lee Baer, Ph.D., at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Siev received his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with foremost pioneers in OCD treatment and cognitive-behavioral therapy, Edna Foa, Ph.D., Jonathan Grayson, Ph.D., and Dianne Chambless, Ph.D.
Siev has a research grant from the International OCD Foundation to study scrupulosity, an OCD presentation characterized by religious or moral fears. He has published and presented extensively in journals such as Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Behaviour Research and Therapy, and Journal of Anxiety Disorders, and at national and international conferences.
