MSI’s Baudhuin Preschool Partners with Alvin Sherman Library
The Baudhuin Preschool at the Mailman Segal Institute has entered into a mutually beneficial partnership with the Alvin Sherman Library. Anne Leon, MLS, interim executive director of Public Library Services, is promoting this effort and seeks to engage and provide services for children with autism spectrum disorders.
Youth Services Librarian Meagan Albright provided library card applications and information on upcoming events at the Baudhuin Super Saturday Parent Training event. This was followed by a workshop on emerging literacy, vocabulary development, and phonemic awareness for the parents of the Baudhuin students. Baudhuin speech-language pathologists trained the library staff on how to use Boardmaker software to visually enhance the library’s Story Time activities. The software aids in increasing the comprehending abilities of young children with autism spectrum disorders or other developmental delays.
Nancy Lieberman, Ed.S., CCC-SLP, director of the Baudhuin Preschool and Susan Kabot, Ed.D., CCC-SLP., Consortium director at MSI, have given presentations at the library on the characteristics of autism spectrum disorders in young children. During Autism Awareness Month, art completed by Baudhuin preschool students will be on display in the Children’s Section of the library.
