More than 600 Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Students Earn Dean’s List for Fall 2013

President Hanbury speaks to students who earned the Dean’s List for the fall 2013 semester.

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences hosted a ceremony on Feb. 18 to honor the 620 undergraduate students who earned the Dean’s List for the fall 2013 semester. The outstanding students were joined in celebration by faculty, friends and family, and members of university leadership.

“Earning the Dean’s List honor is an indicator of your commitment, values, and priorities,” said Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the college, who opened the ceremony. “Many of you have demonstrated the ability to balance not only academic work, but leadership in the community, on campus, and in jobs. Your success is earned, and you have a right to be proud.”

Rosenblum also acknowledged the vital role of faculty and family members, who aid in the students’ success by providing continued support and mentorship.

Each student in attendance received public recognition and a commemorative gift to signify the academic accomplishment. To earn the Dean’s List, undergraduate students must be enrolled full time (12 or more credits) at NSU, earn at least a 3.5 GPA for the semester, and receive no incomplete grades.

To conclude the ceremony, NSU President George Hanbury II, Ph.D., spoke on the honor of representing the top 5 percent of NSU undergraduate students. Hanbury especially commended the first-year students who earned a noteworthy GPA in their first semester after graduation of high school.

“All should recognize the hard work that these young men and women have had to go through to be in that top 5 percent,” Hanbury said. “What we’re trying to do [at NSU] is teach young men and women not only to have good grades, but to learn and to unleash your potential—to be leaders, instead of being led. These are the future leaders.”

Following the formal ceremony, the students and their guests enjoyed a celebratory reception.
