MOA Offers Merit Scholarship Competition for Grades 1-12, Apr. 9

The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University is encouraging budding artists to attend its 2011 Creative Summer Art Academy (CSAA) by holding a Merit Scholarship Competition.  The competition, open to students entering grades 1-12 and interested in the Creative Summer Art Academy, will take place on Saturday, Apr. 9 from 10 am to 1:00 pm at the Museum’s Studio School.

Check-in will be held from 9:15 am to 10 am.  Participants will be separated into grade groups 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12, and will then have up to three hours to create one drawing to be submitted for scholarship consideration.  All supplies will be provided by the Studio School.  Faculty members and staff will be present. Deadline to RSVP is 4 pm, April 7 and must include student name and grade they will be entering for 2011/2012 school year. RSVPs are required and should be made by emailing education1@moafl.org.  Once the RSVP has been received, a Scholarship Competition Registration Form will be emailed and must be turned in upon check-in.

While students are engaged in the competition, parents are invited to browse the new Books & Books location across the street from the Studio School in the Museum’s lobby.  Refreshments will be available for purchase in the café.  (Parents will not have access to the Studio School during the competition).

In 2010, scholarships were awarded to more than half of the 250 applicants interested in the arts. Winners will be notified within three weeks of the competition date.

Competitors who complete a drawing during the competition and are not awarded a scholarship will receive a 10% discount off of Creative Summer Art Academy tuition fees.  All prices will be outlined in the CSAA registration packet, available on April 4.

Additional instructor-recommended scholarships are awarded throughout the five, 2-week camp sessions based on merit and class performance.  The sessions run from June 13-August 19, Monday-Friday from 9:00am-4:00pm. The CSAA offers students focused instruction by local, professional fine art instructors. Many past high school attendees have gone on to receive coveted scholarships and awards, attending prestigious art schools around the US.

Academy instruction is based on the following:

Grades 1-4

Painting, drawing, and design are explored using pencils, inks, charcoal, pastels, tempera, novelty papers, clay, and found materials. Creativity, exploration, and experimentation are all fostered through a variety of guided projects while vocabulary, studio etiquette, and self-expression as core values are encouraged.

Grades 5-8

Subjects covered include design, painting and drawing. Workshops build on the elements of composition, vocabulary, creativity, and the overall process involved with creating a work of art. Set Design will be included in the curriculum during sessions III & IV in conjunction with Musical Theatre Production class.

Grades 9-12

Students will be introduced to Anatomy & Structure (study and analysis of the skeleton and muscular structure of the human figure) using a variety of live models and two and three-dimensional references to the skeleton.  Instructors work with students intensively to develop drawing skills, engage them in the capabilities of the human form and how to view its physical diversity. The fundamental techniques of drawing and painting are taught, including paint handling, surface preparation, color mixing, and self-expression.

Multiple session and child discounts are available. In addition to session costs, morning and/or afternoon care is offered.  Those who register between April 4 and April 9 and do not receive a scholarship will receive a 10% early registration discount.  All Creative Summer Art Academy fees, discounts, and class curriculum info can be found inside the CSAA registration packet, available online April 4 for open enrollment.

For additional information on the Merit Scholarship Competition or the CSAA, visit the Museum’s website www.moafl.org, call 954-262-0239, or email education1@moafl.org.

Concurrent to the CSAA, the Studio School will offer “Summer Nights of Art”, a 10-week semester for adults, offering evening classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays.  Open enrollment begins April 4; registration forms will be available online at that time.
