Medical School Earns Pharmacopeia Appointment

In December 2011, Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine was appointed as a member of United States Pharmacopeia (USP), becoming the first college of osteopathic medicine in the United States to earn this prestigious honor. The USP is a scientific nonprofit organization that sets standards for the quality, purity, identity, and strength of medicines, food ingredients, and dietary supplements manufactured, distributed, and consumed worldwide. In the U.S., the organization’s drug standards are enforceable by the Food and Drug Administration.

“We are the first college of osteopathic medicine ever accepted for membership as osteopathic medicine was not eligible until 2011,” said Anthony J. Silvagni, D.O., Pharm.D., M.Sc., who serves as the college’s dean. “It took seven years of meeting with USP to reach this goal, which occurred because of the reputation of our college and the accomplishments of our faculty members.”
