Medical Professor Re-elected to Nonprofit’s Board

Naushira Pandya, M.D.

Naushira Pandya, M.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Geriatrics at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, was recently re-elected to the Board of Directors of the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) Florida Affiliate.

Headquartered in Miami, Florida, AFAR Florida was established in 2008 to expand the national AFAR organization’s efforts to support research on aging regionally.

Comprised of a regional director and a board of directors, the Florida Affiliate partners with area universities, like-minded community groups, foundations, and business leaders to achieve three primary goals:

  • Provide research grants to Florida’s best and brightest Ph.D.s and M.D.s in the field of aging research.
  • Increase the distribution of funds to scientists at Florida-based educational institutions.
  • Create educational opportunities for scientists and the general public, creating environments that support the exchange of ideas and the sharing of new discoveries about healthy aging.

Since the national organization’s founding in 1981, AFAR has granted $124 million to nearly 2,600 scientists as part of its broad-based series of grant programs. AFAR has a proven track record of recognizing potential success in early-career scientists and as a result, many AFAR-supported researchers have produced scientific findings that are dramatically changing both our understanding and practice of medicine.

With a prestigious four-star rating from Charity Navigator, AFAR is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support biological and biomedical research on aging. The organization is devoted to creating the knowledge that all of us need to live healthy, productive, and independent lives.
