Matrix Online Math Column Returns with New Topic, Problem-Solving Contest

MatrixA new issue of Matrix math column has arrived. Created by faculty in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Math, Science, and Technology, Matrix aims to show how math can apply to various disciplines, general life situations, and even humor.

The eighth edition of Matrix explores the topic of “mathematization,” reducing a problem to a mathematical form. From creating mathematical models for DNA to calculating the gambling odds for casinos, using math to solve everyday problems is becoming more and more popular in society, as Matrix explains.

Find the Solution, Win a Prize
Each Matrix issue also features the Problem of the Month contest, open to current students and alumni with a valid NSU email address. This month’s problem deals with an investment strategy and includes a multiple-choice option for selecting the solution. The first person to submit the correct answer by Nov. 15 will win a prize. Winners must be able to visit NSU’s main campus in a timely manner to claim their prize.

The college congratulates Sharbel Bousemaan (B.S. in Computer Science, ’13), who was the first student to submit the correct answer to Matrix Issue 7’s Problem of the Month.

For more information about Matrix, contact Abdelkrim Bourouihiya, Ph.D., associate professor at the college.
