Mathematics Colloquium Series Opens with Talk on Neuronal Field Models, Oct. 6

Evan Haskell, Ph.D., associate professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, will open the 2010–2011 Mathematics Colloquium Series, presented by the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology, with a talk titled, “Localized Activity States for Neuronal Field Models of Feature Selectivity.” The presentation will take place on Oct. 6 from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Mailman-Hollywood Building, room 311.

About the Presentation
The formation of spatially localized activity profiles, or “bumps,” has long been proposed as a mechanism for feature selectivity in models of the visual system, head direction system, saccadic eye movements, and working memory. In sensory systems, such bumps should exist only during the presentation of a stimulus, whereas in memory and certain motor systems they should persist for some period after the initiating stimulus.

In his talk, Haskell will discuss the development of a field model for a neuronal network with recurrent interactions that lead to the formation of spatially localized activity states and the influence of the topology of the stimulus space on the formation of these bumps. All NSU students, faculty and staff members are welcome to attend this presentation.

The annual Mathematics Colloquium Series, hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, began in fall 2009 at Nova Southeastern University. These lectures aim to increase awareness of mathematics’ importance and applications in daily life. The series also gives mathematics faculty members and students the opportunity to discuss independent research and share their passion for the subject.
