March of Dimes Names 2013 Women of Distinction; Mailman Segal Center Dean among Honorees

The 2013 March of Dimes Women of Distinction Awards will be presented at a special luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at the Signature Grand, 6900 West State Road 84 in Davie, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  Co-Chairs Marcella Rutherford, Ph.D., dean of NSU’s College of Nursing, and Bella Cabrera, chief nursing officer for Memorial Healthcare System, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, recently announced the recipients of the annual award that honors women whose outstanding achievements both professionally and personally serve as an example to the Broward County community.

Among this year’s honorees is Roni Leiderman, dean of the NSU’s Mailman Segal Center for Human Development.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. More than 4 million babies were born last year in the United States and the March of Dimes helped each and every one through 75 years of research, education, vaccines and breakthroughs.

Other recipients of the Women of Distinction Award include:

  • Kathleen Cannon is Executive Director of the United Way
  • Rose Marie Cossick is Community Involvement Specialist for the Broward Sheriff’s Office
  • Genia Duncan Ellis is President/CEO of RiverWalk Fort Lauderdale
  • April Patterson, DDS is Owner of Dr. Patty Dental Boutique
  • Tonia Etta Royster is Nurse Manager Level lll for Broward Health
  • Eris Sandler is Executive Vice President Marketing for BankUnited
  • Nicky Tesser is Director of Marketing & PR, Covelli Enterprise (Panera Bread)
  • Angela T. Messam is Partner at Messam Construction/Asset Realty & Associates, LLC
  • Donna Riordan, RN, MSN, MHA is Executive Director, Maternal Child Services for Holy Cross Hospital.
