Mailman Segal Center for Human Development Announces the Passing of Staff Member

It is with sadness that we announce the recent passing of Shelley Obrand, a member of the staff of the Mailman Segal Center for Human Development (MSC). Obrand, who suffered from muscular dystrophy, created and ran the center’s Super Kids! tutoring program for children in grades K-5, who have ADHD learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, or require remedial attention. “Shelley made a remarkable impact on children and everyone who met her,” said Roni Leiderman, Ph.D., MSC dean.  “She changed lives with her amazing wisdom and had an indescribable aura about her.  Simply and truthfully told, Shelley was one of a kind.”

Obrand’s tutoring program provided a comprehensive assessment and a goal-oriented learning program for each student. Students were given custom-designed task sheets which encouraged learning through creative, hands-on activities. Students graphed their own academic progress through a highly motivating tracking system and precision teaching. Learning was continuously monitored by master’s level teachers who worked with only two children at a time to maximize each student’s potential.

The family has asked that donations in Shelley’s memory be made payable to the Mailman Segal Center.
