LLI to Host Discussion about Redistricting of Congressional & State Boundaries, Aug. 5

The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) will host a presentation, “Redistricting with Charles Milsted, AARP Florida Associate State Director for Advocacy,” on Friday, August 5, 10-11:30 a.m., at University Park Plaza, room 119.

During the presentation, the AARP staff will provide an overview of the decennial processes of the Census reporting, reappointment and redistricting.  Topics will include the regulations established in the Federal Voting Rights Act, the implications for Florida redistricting of the recently approved Constitutional amendments 5 and 6 and legislative timeline for plan approval.  There will be computer-based demonstrations of the software used to draw Congressional, state House and Senate district lines.

In Florida, the state constitution provides that the Legislature has the duty to redraw Congressional and state legislative district boundaries, but public involvement in the process is vital.  A primary focus of the program will be to introduce voters to the importance of redistricting and how to become active participants in the process.

As the AARP Associate State Director for Advocacy, Milsted is assigned to the legislative office in Tallahassee.  During Florida legislative sessions he coordinates the initiatives that include state budget, taxes, affordable housing, and insurance issues among others.  He is currently a member of the Agency for Health Care Administration Advisory Council, the Florida Housing Study Commission, the County Commission Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and the Capital Area Coalition on Aging.  He was appointed to serve on the Governor’s Taxation and Budget Reform Committee and served as liaison during the proceedings of the Taxation and Budget Reform Commission.
