On Saturday Jan. 28,100 children with a variety of disabilities participated in the Challenge Air for Kids and Friends event at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Fifteen local pilots volunteered to take each child for a half-hour airplane ride.

While waiting for their turn, the children, with the assistance of Nova Southeastern University Occupational Therapy students from the College of Health Care Sciences, engaged in various forms of recreation including arts and crafts, bowling, and face painting. These activities focused on the children’s unique abilities and interests while creating social interaction, facilitating learning and providing an opportunity for each child to build self-esteem and confidence.
