Lilavati: The Intersection of Dance and Mathematics, May 5

NSU will host Lilavati on May 5, 2018 from 5-6 pm in the Performance Theater. This dance drama will decode the ancient Sanskrit Indian text “Lilavati”, written in 1150 AD, by the Indian mathematician/astronomer, Bhaskaracharya.

Lilavati was used as a standard textbook for about 700 years, until the British system of education was introduced in India. It was written before the days of printing and is composed in verse form so that students could memorize the rules without the need to refer to written texts. In the text, playful poetry and mathematics come together seamlessly.

Traditionally, mathematics is taught using the boring lecture/textbook method and is disconnected from the vibrant dance world. This program will give life to mathematics through traditional, colorful Indian dance and music.

Admission is free. For more information, click here.
