Law Center to Host Symposium, “The ABA Model Act Governing the Representation of Children in Abuse, Neglect and Dependency Proceedings,” Feb. 10

NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center and the American Bar Association (ABA) will host a symposium on designing strategies for implementing the ABA Model Act on Representing Children in Child Welfare Cases. Scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10, from 8 am – 5 pm, this dynamic symposium will bring together experts from around the country to discuss the advancement of a right to quality counsel for children in abuse and neglect cases.

The Nova Law Review will publish a symposium edition which will be available after the event.  Participants, including children’s lawyers, policy advocates, judges, private lawyers, law school clinicians, professors and law students, will hear from our expert panels focusing on issues such as:

•    Examining right to counsel efforts around the nation
•    Legislative progress and barriers to implementation
•    Critical views on quality of counsel and best practices for the inclusion of lawyers
•    Addressing strong opposing positions on whether to assign lawyers for children
•    Brainstorming next steps in the right to counsel movement

There will be opportunities for feedback and brainstorming during the symposium as well as ongoing involvement in this effort post-event.
