Grammy-award winning artist and actor Common, known as the “King of Conscious Hip Hop,” recently visited NSU as a part of the “Life 101 … Personally Speaking” series.
During the April 7 event, the lyricist discussed his writing process; creating albums such as Can I Borrow a Dollar? and Like Water for Chocolate; working with producers like No I.D., Jay Dee, and Kanye West; launching the Common Ground Foundation; his acting debut in Smokin’ Aces and working on subsequent movies; and life lessons learned along the way.
Common spoke to a packed house at NSU’s Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, and answered numerous audience questions during the interactive, informal, 60-minute interview program.
This “Life 101” event was brought to the NSU community by the Division of Student Affairs, and was hosted by Mark Cavanaugh, Ph.D., professor at NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.
The overall goal of “Life 101” is to bring leaders from business, entertainment, politics and athletics to our campus to educate and inspire the NSU community.
