January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

January GlaucomaGlaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation over 4 million Americans have glaucoma in the United States and nearly half of those with glaucoma are not aware that they have the disease. There are no early warning signs or symptoms with glaucoma, which is called the “silent thief of sight.” Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary to prevent blindness from glaucoma.

Everyone is at risk for glaucoma, however, it is the leading cause of blindness in the African-American and Hispanic populations. Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African Americans than Caucasians and occurs at an earlier age, about 10 years earlier in African Americans.

Help raise awareness:

  • Talk to friends and family about glaucoma.
  • If you have glaucoma, don’t keep it a secret.
  •  A comprehensive dilated eye examination is key in the detection and management of Glaucoma.

The Eye Care Institute recommends that everyone get a comprehensive eye examination.
