Alumni Spotlight: J.D. Martinez Named AL All-Star and AL Player of the Week; Will Play in Major League’s All Star Game
Former Nova Southeastern University baseball standout J.D. Martinez has been named an American League All-Star and the AL Player of the Week, as recently announced by Major League Baseball. The MLB All-Star Game will take place on June 14 in Cincinnati. The game will be televised live from Great American Ballpark at 7:30 PM on FOX.
Earning his second career AL Player of the Week award, the announcement lands on the same day as Martinez’s first career All-Star bid. The Detroit Tigers’ slugger is having a career year, launching 23 HR’s, placing him second to future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols in the home run leaders category in the AL.
This past week, Martinez hit .458 (11 for 24) with four home runs, a double and 10 RBIs in six games against National League rival Pittsburgh and AL East foe Toronto. He led the majors in slugging percentage (1.000) and total bases (24), and tied for first in baseball in home runs. He was tied for first in the AL in on-base percentage (.500), ranked second in RBIs and third in batting average.
Martinez’s month of June was one for the ages, as his 11 home runs tied for the third-most in Detroit franchise history, and they’re the most since Mickey Tettleton hit 11 homers in June 1993.
