International Business Student Association (IBSA) Hosted H.E. Ambassador Samson Iteboje, Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations
On Saturday, April 28, 2018, NSU had the honor and privilege to host His Excellency, Ambassador Samson Itegboje. The Nigerian ambassador was received at the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship. Following a brief fashion show of African dresses, Ambassador Itegboje gave a speech and participated in a question and answer session.
In his speech, Ambassador Itegboje provided a brief history of Nigeria. As the largest country in Africa, in terms of population, and one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Nigeria represents a land of opportunity for businesses and investors. Ambassador Itegboje highlighted the country’s achievements by giving a summary of the progress made in the past two years under the country’s new government.
Ambassador Itegboje also spoke about economic opportunities for growth in Nigeria, including agricultural products and telecommunication. The country has seen almost 50 percent growth in foreign direct investment under the country’s new regime. This serves as a reflection of the efforts made to reduce corruption and bring stability to a historically volatile region. Ambassador Itegboje referenced the contribution that Nigeria makes to help neighboring countries reduce conflict.
The timing of the visit was particularly beneficial because, just two days later, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, became the first official from an African state to be received by President Trump. The two discussed security and economic issues. The business opportunities that were discussed mirrored the investment and trade opportunities mentioned in the ambassador’s speech.
Ambassador Itegboje was welcomed to the university by members of the International Business Student Association, Africa Working Group, and Student Meditation Services. The event was well attended by students, faculty members, and the community.
