Information Systems Doctoral Student Presents at International Symposium

NSU Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences (GSCIS) doctoral student Gerard Christman recently presented his paper “On Facilitating Stability Operations: A Net-Centric, Federated Approach to Information Sharing” during the 15th International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium: “The Evolution of C2” Conference in Santa Monica, Ca., June 22-24.

Christman’s paper discusses recent responses to natural disasters and humanitarian affairs by our government. These responses have served to highlight gaps in the ability to readily share information amongst federal agencies and departments.

The paper describes an information systems-based approach to information sharing that leverages existing systems, yet focuses on data mediation services to ensure data is published in a manner that disparate systems can consume it. It further advocates a structured or templated approach to assessing the post-disaster environment to ensure that situational awareness is informed by complete, accurate, authoritative, and geo-spatially referenced data.

Christman plans to complete his Ph.D. in Information Systems in 2011. He is currently a Program manager for FCI, a defense-related information technology corporation located in Chantilly, Virginia. He provides scientific, engineering, technical and analytical support to the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon in Washington DC.
