Information about Worker’s Compensation Benefit

The Florida Worker’s Compensation Law is interpreted as assuring a quick and efficient delivery of disability and medical benefits to an injured worker. Worker’s Compensation benefits facilitate the worker’s return to gainful reemployment, and provide prompt delivery of benefits to the injured worker. Employees are covered by worker’s compensation from their first day on the job. There is no waiting period for eligibility for worker’s compensation benefits.

As an employee of Nova Southeastern University who suffers an injury/illness arising out of and in the course of employment you should report the work-related accident to your supervisor, Office of Risk Management, or HR contact immediately, or as soon as possible but no later than thirty (30) days from the date the accident occurs, or within thirty (30) days of the date the doctor says you are suffering from a work-related injury. Failure to report an injury/illness within (30) days may result in the claim being denied under certain circumstances. An injury/illness must be reported to Risk Management by completing the First Report of Injury or Illness packet found online at http://www.nova.edu/risk/forms/workers-comp.pdf. Please note all pages must be accurately completed and signed prior to submission of a claim unless there are extenuating circumstances that would prohibit you (employee) from doing so. In such instance, either the employee or the department supervisor should contact the Office of Risk Management immediately to notify of same.

Self-referral for medical treatment, exception of an emergency, or after hour urgent/emergent care could result in denial by the insurance company.

The Risk Management Office has updated information pertaining to your workers’ compensation benefit on its website; kindly take the time to familiarize yourself with our site and the information. Questions regarding your Workers’ Compensation benefit may be directed to risk@nova.edu, and by direct call to ext. 25404. Your safety is our goal!
