HPD Students Compete in the 2014 Ethics Bowl Competition
The NSU College of Health Care Sciences recently hosted the 8th annual Ethics Bowl. Typically, the event involves students from the Colleges of Health Care Science and Nursing, but demonstrating NSU’s inter-professional focus, the Multicultural Affairs Committee this year opened the competition to all NSU Health Professions Divisions programs, including pharmacy and dental medicine. The evening began with a lovely dinner and a riveting speech on ethics by Robert Grosz, Ed.D., professor of physician assistant studies and public health. Many of the teams spent hours practicing with their coaches in preparation for the event. Teams of three to five students from each program went head-to-head against opposing teams, showing their ethical rationale and skills. Teams were presented with ethical dilemmas regarding situations that medical professionals may face in their daily practices.
After four rounds, the College of Pharmacy team was crowned the winner. Second place was awarded to the physician assistant students from Fort Myers. Third place went to the nursing students from the Fort Lauderdale campus. The Spirit award was given to two teams this year: the physical therapy students from Tampa and the physician assistant students from Fort Myers for having the most program supporters. A special thanks to all the student participants, coaches, moderators, and judges! This was truly a memorable event that would not have been the same without your contributions.
