Several employees from Nova Southeastern University’s Health Professions Division formed Team HPD and participated in NSU’s annual Relay For Life event on  April 12 benefiting the American Cancer Society. Together the team raised over $4,700 winning the ACS Silver Team award and overall, the event raised over $23,000 (just $4,000 short of their goal). Relay For Life signifies the route of the cancer patient. As the sun goes down, this signifies receiving a diagnosis. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life program is about so much more than just walking around a track overnight.

The event began at 6:00 pm with an opening ceremony, followed by a survivor lap and a caregiver lap to recognize those that have won their battle against cancer and those that have given care to cancer patients. Throughout the night various activities were held to help keep the teams awake. One of the most poignant activities was the luminaria ceremony. This is when the luminaria bags are lit to honor loved ones who have passed or are fighting the disease. This lap is done in silence allowing each participant time to reflect and pay their respects.  While NSU’s relay was cut short due to inclement weather the event lasted for 11 hours!

Team HPD would like to thank all of those who participated, helped us fundraise, and supported our journey throughout this wonderful campaign!  And although the NSU team’s official relay event has already passed, the chance to get involved and help raise funds hasn’t! That’s because the NSU Relay for Life Team is still hoping to raise a grand total of $27,000 before the August 1 cutoff date. Visit the HPD Relay for Life Team page at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/hpd.

NSU will be hosting this event again next year so if you are interested in participating as part of Team HPD, please contact Christine Hellkamp at hellkamp@nova.edu as she will be next year’s Team Captain.
