HPD Holds Patient Safety Educational Event
Participants at HPD’s 3rd Annual Health Profession Division Patient Safety Educational Event “Healthy Conversations For Safer Healthcare”
The 3rd Annual Health Professions Division Patient Safety Educational Event, “Healthy Conversations for Safer Healthcare,” was held on Apr. 8 and 9 at NSU’s Health Professions Division. It was repeated on Apr. 16 at NSU’s North Miami Beach campus.
Free for faculty, staff, and students, the event provided the opportunity to showcase information and various initiatives to decrease risk to patients in all health care settings. Hundreds of participants learned about many different facets of patient safety including:
- medication safety, minimizing acetaminophen (Tylenol) toxicity, over the counter medications and pregnancy, prescription bloopers
- strategies to decrease health care acquired infections, learn what’s hiding on your hands
- how to disclose to patients and families when care has not been provided as planned or the unexpected occurs
- team STEPPS – a formal program that teaches strategies and tools to enhance performance and patient safety
- confidentiality and managing the hidden risks
- body mechanics
- sitting pretty and sitting right
