Hispanic Heritage Month at NSU Continues

Nova Southeastern University will recognize and honor Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about the Latin culture through a variety of activities.

Upcoming events include Dance Salsa Night, a Celebration of Hispanic Heritage through the Spanish Language and a celebration and concert for children. More information can be found at www.nova.edu/hispanicheritage.

Wednesday, October 10

Hablamos Ahora! Open Dialogue with NSU’s Latino/Hispanic constituency and friends, 12 – 1:30 pm

Spanish speaking Sharks talk about their specific heritages, educating those present about the different Spanish speaking cultures. Join us in this educational experience in Español.

Hispanic Historical Presence in Building America’s Future, 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Hispanic family of students, faculty and staff at the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education tell their stories and contributions to our society. Attendees will be asked to fill out a quiz at each table on information gathered from this exchange. Prizes will be awarded. Location:  Fischler School, 1750 NE 167 Street, North Miami Beach. Annual Hispanic Heritage Dance Salsa Night, 8:00-11:00 pm

The Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA) will be hosting their Annual Hispanic Heritage Dance Salsa Night event. HLSA, joined by the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA) invite students, faculty, advisors, and staff to celebrate Hispanic culture and experience Spanish dance and food.  Salsa instructors will give lessons during the dance to attendees.  Location:  University Flight Deck. Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration & Concert for Children, 2:00 – 3:30 pm

The Alvin Sherman Library sponsors this musical event in the Alvin Sherman Library, 2nd Floor Gallery. Paco Moreno & Friends perform authentic music and dances from Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world. Special guest reader is Miss Mundo Latino, Ximena Raquel Alverez. Event is for all ages. “A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage through the Spanish Language and its use and contact with English in the United States,” 6:00-7:30 pm

Farquhar College of Arts & Sciences will host this presentation with guest speaker: Andrew Lynch, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish at University of Miami. NSU-Fort Myers  in association with the Student Government Association and local student clubs and organizations will host a Hispanic-themed Cultural Potluck. The menu will feature food from the Caribbean and South America. Proceeds from the sale of the food will benefit  breast cancer research. NSU – Tampa

“How has your Hispanic Heritage Impacted you?”

NSU-Tampa will recognize and celebrate the students, staff and faculty of the Tampa community through a showcase titled, “How has your Hispanic Heritage Impacted you?” The posting boards throughout the building will show the photos, bios and brief stories from students, staff and faculty on how Hispanic Heritage has impacted as each of them individuals. Hispanic Trivia & Facts

NSU-Tampa will host a weekly Hispanic Trivia contest on random days during Hispanic Heritage Month to boost awareness among staff, students and faculty. Prizes of NSU gear will be awarded to the winners.

NSU-Tampa will also mount Hispanic FACT boards throughout the building feature Hispanic leaders and notable moments in Hispanic history.
