High School Students Get a Taste of Marketing During NSU’s Ice Cream Entrepreneurship Program

For most students, summer means taking a break from school work and relaxing by the water during lazy, hot days. But about 20 local high school students seeking to gain an edge opted to head back to the classroom to participate in Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Ice Cream Entrepreneurship Program, a creative writing and business development experience.

Held from July 16 through July 20 and coinciding with National Ice Cream Month, the students worked in teams to create and launch a new ice cream flavor in partnership with Yo Mama’s Ice Cream shop of Fort Lauderdale. The Department of Writing and Communications at NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) created the free program as a community-led, experiential learning opportunity for high school students interested in the field of communications.

Students spent the first four days of the week with Stephen Andon, Ph.D., NSU assistant professor, department of Writing and Communications (CAHSS), learning about writing, advertising, branding and public relations to create a marketing plan for their unique flavors. On the final day, students delivered their presentations at NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus and pitched their ice cream flavor and marketing plan to a panel of judges.

The teams presented flavors such as “Coco Berry Beach,” “Do it for the Graham,” and “Breakfast of Champions.” However, it was the “Chocolate Wake-Up Call,” a blend of brownies, fudge, caramel and coffee ice cream, which wowed the judges, took home the win and will be featured at Yo Mama’s Ice Cream shop for the next month.

The winning students were Katrina Saumell (Monsignor Pace High School), Mandi Jaffe (Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School), Eden Wright (Pompano Beach High School) and Jonathan Huffman (Cooper City High School).

“The students who participated in the program this year exceeded our expectations and I am so proud of what they accomplished during the week,” said Dr. Andon. “Our goal is to help these high school students harness their creative abilities to develop a business plan and exercise their writing and presentation skills. I am already looking forward to putting on this program again next summer.”
